In the plain sense, what a mushroom lives on is the dead. It threads through fallen wood and eats what died there, raising a body out of decay. Which makes the word Abaye chose worth stopping on. Not ruach. Avir.<\/p>\n
Air is light with the seed still buried in it<\/h2>\n
\u05d0\u05b7\u05d5\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05e8, air, is \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8, light, with a yod driven into its centre. Alef, vav, resh, with a yod wedged between the vav and the resh.<\/p>\n
Rabbi Yosef Gikatilla reads the primordial avir exactly that way: withdraw the yod-point and what remains of the avir is the or, the light that already was, hidden and engraved beforehand (Shekel HaKodesh).<\/p>\n
The air, then, is light with the seed still in it. A mushroom feeding on the dead and drawing from the avir is drawing the hidden light back out of the wood where it was stored, rising overnight with the yod-point still in it, and standing as a body by morning.<\/p>\n
Its name sits at the womb and at the grave<\/h2>\n
\u05e4\u05b4\u05bc\u05d8\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4, a mushroom, is built on \u05e4\u05be\u05d8\u05be\u05e8. That is the root of \u05e4\u05b6\u05bc\u05d8\u05b6\u05e8 \u05e8\u05b6\u05d7\u05b6\u05dd, the opening of the womb (Shemot 13:2), and the root of \u05e0\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05d8\u05b8\u05e8, the word said over the dead.<\/p>\n
One root at the womb and at the grave. The language treats them as a single door, passed in two directions.<\/p>\n
The nifter is the patur, released from the mitzvot entirely (Shabbat 30a), discharged through the same door he was born by.<\/p>\n
Which is what the prophet promised<\/h2>\n

It happens on a dead log every time dew falls. The mushroom is the earth\u2019s own opening of the womb, delivered by the dew while the world is asleep.<\/p>\n Dew, unlike rain, arrives without force. It is a silent phase change when uncontained vapour meets a cold surface, which is why the siddur puts \u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d8\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc, He brings down the dew, inside the blessing of \u05de\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05b5\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05b5\u05bc\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd, the One who revives the dead. Three times a day, in one breath.<\/p>\n A mushroom does not spread by seed. It casts billions of spores into the dark and seeds ground it will never stand in.<\/p>\n Light with it, and light like it.
