The Gemara lists three keys that the Holy One keeps in His own hand and entrusts to no messenger: the key of rain, the key of birth (the Gemara calls it chaya<\/em>, life), and the key of the resurrection of the dead.<\/p>\n

Three keys are in the hand of the Holy One, blessed be He, that were not handed to a messenger. Taanit 2a<\/em><\/p>\n

Eliyahu is handed two of them.<\/p>\n

Both keys turn under one roof<\/h2>\n

He shuts the heavens (Melachim I 17:1), which is the key of rain. He revives the widow\u2019s son (Melachim I 17:22), which is the key of the dead. Both discharge at Tzarfat. The famine his rain-key made is the famine the widow\u2019s cruse of oil outlasts (Melachim I 17:14-16), and the upper room his resurrection-key enters is the same widow\u2019s house. The oil-miracle and the death-miracle are one story in one building.<\/p>\n

One key compounds and one turns once<\/h2>\n

Rain returns. Oil sustains, and in Elisha\u2019s hands it floods until the vessels run out (Melachim II 4), bounded only by how many kelim<\/em>, vessels, were carried in. That key compounds.<\/p>\n

The other key turns once. The widow\u2019s son revives, a single boy. Even Elisha\u2019s own bones revive one corpse flung against them (Melachim II 13:21), never a flow. The dead do not multiply.<\/p>\n

The Mashiach is described in the same terms. He sits at the gates of Rome among the poor who suffer illness, and the Gemara gives his sign:<\/p>\n

All of them untie and bind their bandages at once; he unties one and binds one. He says: perhaps I will be needed, and I must not be delayed. Sanhedrin 98a<\/em><\/p>\n

He heals one for one, so that the instant he is called he is whole enough to rise. The oil-work scales and the death-work does not. The Shabbat table lights both keys before we notice. The custom of a flame for each person in the house counts one for one, the Mashiach\u2019s arithmetic, while the oil inside the flames sustains and grows, Elisha\u2019s. We promise the multiplied blessing and never the multiplied resurrection, because the keys themselves forbid it.<\/p>\n

Rain and resurrection in one blessing<\/h2>\n

The siddur has paired these two keys for two thousand years. The Amidah\u2019s blessing for the One who revives the dead, mechayeh hametim<\/em> (\u05de\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05d9\u05b5\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05b5\u05bc\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd), is also where we name the rain or the dew, morid hatal<\/em> (\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d8\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc), He who brings down the dew. Rain and resurrection sit in one breath, three times a day. Eliyahu\u2019s keyring is that blessing made into a man.<\/p>\n

The register he delivers at<\/h2>\n

At Chorev the wind, the earthquake, and the fire all pass, and God is in the kol demama daka<\/em> (\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc \u05d3\u05b0\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d3\u05b7\u05e7\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4), a thin, hushed voice that comes after them (Melachim I 19:11-12). The Gemara measures other things in sixtieths: sleep is one-sixtieth of death and a dream is one-sixtieth of prophecy (Berachot 57b). One reading takes the thin voice and the dream as the same dose, a fraction a living body can survive. Eliyahu is the courier who delivers at that volume.<\/p>\n

The bird who keeps the covenant<\/h2>\n

The ravens fed him before he ever touched oil (Melachim I 17:6), and a chariot of fire took him up without death (Melachim II 2:11). Because Israel forsook the covenant (Melachim I 19:10), he was set to attend every brit<\/em> afterward (Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 29), which is why a kisei shel Eliyahu<\/em> (\u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05e1\u05b5\u05bc\u05d0 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc), Elijah\u2019s chair, stands at every eighth day.<\/p>\n

The Name spoken when that covenant was founded is the Name of the boundary itself. The command to Avraham opens under one Name only:<\/p>\n

I am El Shaddai; walk before Me and be whole. Bereishit 17:1<\/em><\/p>\n

The Gemara reads Shaddai as the One who said dai<\/em>, enough, to creation (Chagigah 12a). That same dai<\/em> is cut into the flesh on the eighth day, a limit set in the body. The Name also guards every Jewish doorway on the mezuzah, where it is read as Shomer Daltot Yisrael<\/em> (\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b5\u05e8 \u05d3\u05b7\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc), Guardian of the doors of Israel. The prophet at the brit and the Name on the mezuzah keep one watch at one threshold.<\/p>\n

Eliyahu is the last bird in a line. Avraham laid an uncut bird at the founding covenant (Bereishit 15:10). The next brit was carried out by a bird: Tzipora (\u05e6\u05b4\u05e4\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4), whose name holds tzipor<\/em>, bird, took a flint, cut her son, and turned the destroyer aside (Shemot 4:25). Tzipor, Tzipora, Eliyahu.<\/p>\n\n
