They meant it as mockery. The Hebrew says more than “dreamer.” A ba’al<\/em> is an owner, a master, the one who holds title. A dream is one sixtieth of prophecy. Berachot 57b<\/em><\/p>\n Sleep is a small death and a dream is a small prophecy. The author takes the ratio one step further: this life is itself one sixtieth of the soul’s whole career. Every night’s dream is a piece of a lifetime, and every lifetime is a piece of the soul’s longer work. Rav Chisda, Berachot 55a<\/em><\/p>\n A dream is mail. It arrives sealed, and someone has to open it. Rabbi Bana’ah took one dream to twenty-four interpreters in Jerusalem, got twenty-four different readings, and every one of them came true in his life.<\/p>\n \u05db\u05c7\u05bc\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05d7\u05b2\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d4\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b0\u05db\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b7\u05d7\u05b7\u05e8 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e4\u05b6\u05bc\u05d4<\/p>\n All dreams follow the mouth. Berachot 55b<\/em><\/p>\n Rabbi Elazar proves it from Yosef’s own prison: “as he interpreted for us, so it was” (Bereishit 41:13). The dream waits on the word that reads it. The one who interprets is a partner in what comes true.<\/p>\n Yosef reads Pharaoh’s dreams and then does something no interpreter had done. Bereishit 42:6<\/em><\/p>\n Mashbir<\/em>, the one who dispenses. The same root gives mashber<\/em>, the birthstool, the place of breaking through. Yosef holds a store beyond counting and opens it to the whole world in the years of hunger.<\/p>\n The book reads the storehouse as a picture of the soul. Each dream deposited, each life a withdrawal, and Yosef as the banker of God’s soul bank, the mashbir<\/em> of universes, releasing to each soul what it needs for the life it is about to live.
