The Animals Within
A glass of water is half full and half empty at once. It is also completely full, of water and of space, and completely empty, waiting for whatever is poured next. Every true answer in this article works the same way: two readings, both whole.
For three years Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel argued, each saying the law follows them. A voice came from heaven: אֵלּוּ וָאֵלּוּ דִּבְרֵי אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים הֵן, “these and these are the words of the living God” (Eruvin 13b). The question here is how the animals come to live inside us, and it has two answers that stand together the same way.
One and a thousand
Hebrew writes them with the same three letters. אָלֶף, alef, is the first letter and stands for one. אֶלֶף, elef, is a thousand. One life and a thousand lives are spelled alike, and each reading below is one of those two vowels.
The first reading: one life, from the ground
A person can reasonably hold that we live once. On that reading the animals are already in us through the body, because they came out of the same ground first.
וַיִּצֶר ה׳ אֱלֹהִים מִן הָאֲדָמָה כָּל חַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה, “God formed from the ground every beast of the field” (Bereishit 2:19). וַיִּיצֶר ה׳ אֱלֹהִים אֶת הָאָדָם עָפָר מִן הָאֲדָמָה, “God formed the man, dust from the ground” (Bereishit 2:7). One adama, two formings, and the Torah calls both a nefesh chayah, a living being.
The animals were made first, so their ways were in the ground before we were. That is why one person guards a door with his own face like the gatekeeper ant, another stores up in summer like the harvester, and another strikes cedars with nothing but prayer like the worm of Yaakov. Rabbi Yochanan says that had the Torah not been given, we would have learned modesty from the cat, honesty from the ant, faithfulness from the dove and courtesy from the rooster (Eruvin 100b). The lessons were already in the ground.
Yeshayahu describes the end: וְגָר זְאֵב עִם כֶּבֶשׂ וְנָמֵר עִם גְּדִי יִרְבָּץ … וְנַעַר קָטֹן נֹהֵג בָּם, “the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard lie down with the kid … and a small child shall lead them” (Yeshayahu 11:6). The Rambam calls the verse מָשָׁל וְחִידָה, “a parable and a riddle” (Hilchot Melachim 12:1). The wolf and the leopard are people. Read inward, they are also traits. The end of days is a single person in whom the wolf no longer devours the lamb, every animal in him living in peace, led by the small child, the soul.
The mirror reading: a thousand lives, through the soul
The second reading holds the first and adds its reflection. The animals are in the body because they came from the ground first. They are in the soul because the soul has already lived them.
The Arizal writes that a soul can return יתגלגל או בדומם, או בצמח, או בחי, או במדבר, “it returns as stone, as plant, as animal, or as a speaking person,” and that most people do not escape these passages (Sha’ar HaGilgulim 22). He gives the reason plainly: a soul cannot take its correction until it is clothed in a body that can feel, and through what it suffers there מתכפרים עונותיו, “its sins are atoned.”
Atonement through exposure is exactly how immunity works. A dose too small to kill teaches the body the shape of the thing, and the body remembers. אלף מנות של מוות lays out the schedule: a thousand generations allotted, 974 scattered into every generation since, each life ending so the next one arrives already knowing. A lifetime as the ant is a dose. A lifetime as the worm is a dose. The soul comes back carrying what the animal taught it, the way a body carries an antibody it does not remember earning.
On this reading the prophecy is literal and inward at once. A soul that has been the wolf and the lamb holds both. When every dose has been taken, the animals reside in us together, and the small child leads them because the child has been each of them.
Both at once
The ground and the soul are the same glass seen from two sides. Through the body, every person meets the animals once, in the traits they were born with. Through the soul, every person has met them a thousand times, in lives the angel’s touch on the lip made them forget (Niddah 30b). Alef and elef. One and a thousand, spelled the same.
The work is the same on either reading. Find the animal in you, learn what it was made to teach, and lead it.
