Life Propagates Through Smell
Oil is the soul’s matter and smell is its channel, and neither of those says why creation should be built to run on fragrance in the first place.
The answer is that it already does. Life propagates through smell, and it does so everywhere, without anyone involved understanding the system they are running.
The flower never smells for itself
Every flower produces fragrance for its pollinator. Never for its own benefit. The bee does not need to understand botany and the flower does not need to understand entomology. The scent does the work between them.
That is the mechanism by which life calls to life, installed from the start and running continuously whether or not anyone is watching it.
The workers are named for what they do
The Hebrew for bee is דְּבוֹרָה, built on ד־ב־ר: the root of speech, of a word, of the matter of divine utterance. The creature that answers a scent is named for a spoken word. Produce the right smell and what you attract is named for speech. You become the flower.
The butterfly is פַּרְפַּר, which is פַּר doubled. A פַּר is the bull brought as an offering. The creature that lives on nectar carries the name of the korban said twice: the offering made exponential rather than merely repeated.
The beetle, and bitul
The beetle takes what has died and breaks it down until it is ground again. Nothing it does is for display. It works underneath, on the lowest matter there is, and what it produces is foundation.
That posture has a name: בִּיטוּל, bitul, self-nullification before God. To be a beetle is to be a tool and a servant, a transformer of the lowest matter into the thing everything else stands on.
The word and the creature meet across the two tongues, the same way scent and sense and cents meet, the way smelt means both to take metal out of rock and to have already taken something in. This book hears those and records them rather than arguing from them. The beetle and bitul is one of them, and it names the job exactly.

The ant carries a harbour in her name
Solomon sends a person to one insect in particular, and not for its strength.
לֵךְ אֶל נְמָלָה עָצֵל, רְאֵה דְרָכֶיהָ וַחֲכָם
Go to the ant, sluggard; see her ways and be wise. Mishlei 6:6
She carries no ego and no visible authority. She works in the dirt.
Look at the letters inside her name. נְמָלָה holds נָמֵל, a port. A harbour is the one place where the trackless deep meets solid ground, and the ant is built to find it.
What a scent trail actually is
An ant navigates by laying down a chemical trail. One ant’s trail is invisible and useless. A thousand ants running the same line make a track that holds, and every ant that follows it strengthens it for the next.
A drop of fragrant oil in a lamp, once a week, is that. Not a gesture at the idea of one. The same operation: a small quantity of scent laid down repeatedly in one place until the place itself is marked.
Do it long enough and the table stops being somewhere a person passes through. It becomes the נָמֵל: a small harbour mouth, in a house, with a light at it.
There are souls in the long heavy cycles looking for a shoreline. A harbour is where something that has been out in the deep can finally drop anchor.
A beacon at a harbour mouth is not decoration. Fire is charged matter, a column of particles answering fields no eye registers. The beacon does not mark the harbour. It pulls.
All of them are in you
None of this is a visit to a garden to admire the staff. Every one of those creatures is a trait, and a person is carrying the whole set at different strengths.
The flower that gives its scent away and keeps nothing. The bee that answers a word it cannot read. The butterfly that is the offering doubled. The beetle working under everything, turning what died into ground. The ant with no ego at all, laying a line nobody can see until a thousand have walked it.
Nobody starts with the same mix. The work is knowing which one is running, and which one the week in front of you is actually asking for.
Which is why the oil changes with the season
The Baal Shem Tov taught that the sparks are hidden in the lowliest places (Keter Shem Tov 1). The design of creation puts the highest sparks in the lowest things, and what releases them is intention applied to a physical act: a smell, a light, an oil, a vessel. The beetle has known this the whole time.
To attract what creation was built to answer, run creation’s own method. Be a flower. Wild, tamed, nurturing, forgiving, altruistic, by turns. As the season changes, so does a soul, and so should the oil.
The practice is here, with seven oils and the reason for each. The full collection runs to over a hundred, each labelled with its source.
The whole argument is in Kol Tehom, free to read in English and in Hebrew.
