Shemen: Oil Is the Soul of the Tree
Halacha establishes that oil may be poured for a lamp. It never says why oil should matter more than any other permitted fuel. The answer sits in the language.
The soul carries oil in its name
נְשָׁמָה, the word for soul, contains שֶׁמֶן, oil. In kabbalistic reading the embedding of one word inside another is a statement about what a thing is rather than a turn of phrase. The Zohar places the neshamah as the highest of the three layers, nefesh, ruach, neshamah, the one that meets Atzilut directly (Vayikra 23a). The part of a person closest to the Infinite carries oil in its spelling.
If the soul contains oil, the rules for how a soul attaches to a world should be the rules for how oil burns. They are, and the Sages wrote them down as law.
Bameh Madlikin is the physics of the soul
The second chapter of Mishnah Shabbat debates which oils and wicks may be used for the Shabbat lights. Pitch, wax and unrefined fats are ruled out for one mechanical reason: they do not draw cleanly behind the wick. They sputter, and the flame separates from its source.
Read that as a description of a container rather than of a fuel. A crude vessel cannot hold a light without fitful, destructive friction. Compress distinct botanical varieties into an integrated blend and the viscosity changes, which turns a heavy chaotic fluid into a drawn one. The legal parameters are an engineering specification: build the vessel so the fluid climbs without effort, and physical mass converts into steady light.
Three letters, three things
ש־מ־נ does not stop at oil. The same three letters are שְׁמוֹנֶה, eight, the register where the seven days of creation have finished and something else begins. Circumcision on the eighth day. Shmini Atzeret on the eighth. Oil that burns eight nights when physics allows one.
The same three letters are מִשְׁנָה, the Oral Torah, the teaching passed mouth to ear across every generation. What gets poured into a lamp on Shabbat is spelled the way Sinai’s transmission is spelled. The fuel and the word share a body.
שֶׁמֶן וָרֹאשׁ בִּנְוֵה חָכָם
Precious oil and wisdom rest in the dwelling of the wise. Mishlei 21:20
Oil is where stored wisdom physically lives. Which raises a question of geography: where does wisdom-oil sit in the architecture of things?
Heaven is oil on water
שֶׁמֶן and שָׁמַיִם carry the same gematria. Oil is shin 300, mem 40, nun 50. Heaven is shin 300, mem 40, yod 10, final mem 40. Both come to 390.
That identity encodes a cosmology. Oil floats on water and cannot be pulled underneath it, which the Gemara states as a matter of law (Horayot 12a) and the Zohar reads as metaphysics. Chochmah, which the Zohar identifies with oil throughout, sits on top of creation, permeating downward and never mixing.
The Zohar derives shamayim itself from אֵש and מַיִם, fire and water (Bereshit 16b). Add oil and the word for the cosmos becomes the recipe for the lamp.
Man is the tree of the field
כִּי הָאָדָם עֵץ הַשָּׂדֶה
For man is the tree of the field. Devarim 20:19
The largest claim the Torah makes about what a person is arrives in half a verse, in passing, inside a law about not felling fruit trees during a siege. The Netziv reads it as a structural identity rather than an image (Haamek Davar there). Both are rooted in earth and reach upward. Both spend their lives drawing raw material through a hidden interior. Both carry at the centre an essence produced last, stored in the seed, and released only under pressure.
A tree does not give its oil while it is comfortable. The olive yields nothing whole. It goes to the press, is crushed and broken open, and only then does the oil that was inside the whole time finally run. The Torah writes that into the Menorah.
שֶׁמֶן זַיִת זָךְ כָּתִית לַמָּאוֹר
Pure olive oil, beaten, for the light. Shemot 27:20
Beaten, one olive at a time, for the lamp. The crushing is not damage that happens alongside the holiness. The crushing is the mechanism of it.
Which makes the flame a person
נֵר ה’ נִשְׁמַת אָדָם
The lamp of God is the soul of man. Mishlei 20:27
The verse reads the same identity from the far end. If a man is the tree, and the tree’s essence is its oil, and the oil is what burns in the lamp, then the flame on a table is a human soul pressed out and lit. The neshamah contains shemen because the soul is the oil of the human tree.
Burning oil as an offering hands back the pressed essence of a life, returned finer than it came, to be poured out again and make more light.
Worked out in full in Kol Tehom, free in English and Hebrew. The oils are here.
