Description

The gematria of the Tetragrammaton — God’s Name as it appears across every page of the Torah — equals 26. These 26 oils carry the same count, each one drawn from plants rooted in the Temple service or carried in the hands of the prophets.

The selection is not arbitrary. We worked from the Torah, the Talmud (Tractate Menachot and Keritot), and the plant traditions surrounding the Mishkan and the Beit HaMikdash. Oils associated with the ketoret, with the anointing oil of the Mishkan, with the seven species of the Land — these come first. Oils bound to a prophet’s healing or a patriarch’s blessing follow.

Among them: olive (the base of the Menorah), sesame (the base of the ketoret according to many Rishonim), and pumpkin (tied to the gourd of Yonah and to the tradition of Rav’s disciples). Twenty-three more carry their own weight of source and story.
