Thirty-one pieces. Every line is an argument running between two of them. Tap one, or use the list below.

Start here

The deep

  • Tohu  Not emptiness. A place already settled, which is why creation was aimed elsewhere.
  • Tehom  Yosef is the only man in the Torah blessed with the deep, and he is blessed twice.
  • Baka  One verb opens the deep, the sea, the dawn and the grave. Shaddai comes to 314.
  • Cheshvan  The flood began on the seventeenth, and the rain prayer sits inside the resurrection blessing.
  • Under His Wings  Avraham leaves one bird uncut. The world was hatched, not built.

Zion and Yosef

  • Tzion  The place the world came out of, entered through a water shaft.
  • Yosef  The redeemer who inherited on a technicality, and who comes to 156 as Zion does.
  • Asof Asef  One verb gathers the harvest, the soul, and the world. A lamp decides which.
  • Hakol  Everything and the voice, one word to the ear and two on the page.
  • Nun  Bent, straight, suspended, missing. Fifty gates, and Moshe got forty-nine.
  • Zion Before the Word  The place standing before light was spoken. Torah goes out from it, and Torah is light.
  • Yosef, Master of Dreams  Ba’al hachalomot, the owner of the dreams, and the mashbir who opened the storehouses to the world.
  • One Seal, No Two Alike  Pharaoh’s ring and the drowning share a root. God stamps every person with one seal and none comes out the same.

Keys, seals and mountains

  • Eliyahu  The man with two keys, rain and the raising of the dead.
  • Zevulun  The treasure buried in the sand.
  • Manna  The food that gives more than it takes.
  • No Iron in the House  Iron shortens life and the altar lengthens it. The shamir split mountains and seeds made them home.
  • The Altar on the Mountain of the Curse  The eyeball mountain gets the altar and the joy. Both pictures of the day are true.
  • Baruch HaKol  The bones came together at a sound. Blessing the whole inventory, and Genesis with God.
  • The Oil of Yonah’s Gourd  Shemen kik, the oil left outside the lamp, and why a blend can carry it.

What death cannot reach

All of it runs out of one book. Kol Tehom is free to read, in English and in Hebrew.
