Manna: the Food That Gives More Than It Takes

God likes refinement: the sift, the filter, the separation of fine from coarse. This is the architecture of the Mishkan service. The flour of the menachot, the meal offerings, went through thirteen sieves, each above the next, the top one catching the bran and the bottom one catching the fine flour (Menachot 76b). God does not ask for more. He asks for finer.

Bread with no residue

The manna was the purest food that ever existed.

לֶחֶם אַבִּירִים אָכַל אִישׁ

Man ate the bread of the mighty. Tehillim 78:25

The Gemara gives two readings of abirim. Rabbi Akiva says it is bread the ministering angels eat. Rabbi Yishmael says it is bread absorbed into the 248 limbs, so nothing was left to discard (Yoma 75b). Either way it left no residue. It was food that had already passed through every sieve before it landed. Heaven did not send Israel a large amount of food. It sent the refined fraction, the solet, the finest flour, of creation itself.

Refined food is meant to be passed on

Coarse food is consumed, taken in, broken down, spent. Refined food is meant to be given back. A portion of the manna was set aside before Hashem and kept (Shemot 16:33-34). The most refined food in history was the one food a portion of which was returned instead of eaten.

Look at where God put the most life in creation. The fish releases millions of eggs into the water and asks nothing back. The organisms God filled with the most life are built to over-produce, to give past any chance of consuming their own output. Life propagates by surplus rather than by exchange. The refined thing exists to be given again, and in the giving it seeds more life than it ever held.

A cup that creates

The word for coriander, kusbara (כֻּסְבָּרָה), opens into kos bara, a cup that creates. When Israel ate the manna and set a portion before Hashem, they handed back a cup of creation, refined light and refined smell, to be poured out again into other worlds. The manna came down to teach a nation how to be a cup that creates: take the light, refine it, give it back finer than it fell.

The name is a tribe

The Torah itself gives the name of coriander as gad.

וְהוּא כְּזֶרַע גַּד לָבָן

It was like white coriander seed. Shemot 16:31

The manna is gad, and Gad is also the name of a tribe. Look at what that tribe was blessed with. Yaakov blesses Gad with a line that pounds the same three letters four times.

גָּד גְּדוּד יְגוּדֶנּוּ, וְהוּא יָגֻד עָקֵב

Gad, a troop shall troop upon him, and he shall troop upon their heel. Bereishit 49:19

The give-more organism becomes an army, the surplus becomes troops, and the line lands on the akev, the heel, the same heel Yaakov was named for. Moshe blesses him differently: baruch marchiv Gad (בָּרוּךְ מַרְחִיב גָּד), blessed is the One who widens Gad (Devarim 33:20). Marchiv comes from rachav, width, the opposite of meitzar, the narrow place that gives Mitzrayim its name. To bless Gad is to bless the breaking open of a constriction. Heaven’s most refined food carries the name of the tribe whose blessing is surplus and the widening of every narrow place.
