Zion Before the Word
Before tohu, before bohu, before the breath moved over the water, a place was already standing. The tradition names it plainly. The deep arrives later in the verse, and the void needs something to be empty of. The place came first.
What came before the world
Bereishit Rabbah opens with a list of six things that preceded creation. Two were created outright, the Torah and the Throne of Glory. Four arose in thought before anything was made: the Patriarchs, Israel, the Beit HaMikdash, and the name of Mashiach.
Six things preceded the creation of the world. The Torah and the Throne of Glory were created; the Patriarchs, Israel, the Temple and the name of Mashiach arose in thought to be created. Bereishit Rabbah 1:4
Israel stands on that list beside the Temple. Your soul is on the same page as Zion, written before the first day. Coming home is the return trip.
From Zion goes out Torah, and Torah is light
Two prophets, a century apart, say the same line.
For from Zion shall go forth Torah, and the word of Hashem from Jerusalem. Yeshayahu 2:3; Michah 4:2
Mishlei supplies the next link.
For a mitzvah is a lamp, and Torah is light. Mishlei 6:23
The chain runs on its own. Torah goes out from Zion. Torah is light. The first thing God spoke was light. Whatever the light came out of was already standing before the light was spoken.
The stone the world was founded on
The Gemara in Yoma names the stone in the Holy of Holies, where the Ark once stood: even shetiyah, the foundation stone. It records three opinions on where the world began, and it rules the mishnah follows the Sages.
It was called Shetiyah, for from it the world was founded… and the Sages say: the world was created from Zion. Yoma 54b
The Sages bring their proof from Tehillim 50. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shone forth. The Gemara reads it as the place where the beauty of the whole world was gathered and completed. A second teaching in the same passage goes further: heaven and earth alike were created from Zion.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God has shone forth. Tehillim 50:2
Chosen, taken, and never renamed
For Hashem has chosen Zion; He desired it for His dwelling. Tehillim 132:13
David spends the opening of that psalm refusing sleep until he finds the place. When he takes it, the verse records two names on one hill.
David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is the City of David. Shmuel II 5:7
A king can put his name on the gate. The prophets keep using the name the ground had before any king arrived.
Noiz, read backward
Underneath the voice there was noise, sound with nothing carved into it yet. Read the word backward and it spells Zion. The raw material of sound and the place sound comes out of are one thing read from two ends. That is the reading behind the title of the second book of Kol Tehom, NoiZ: Already Infinite.
Every flame you light stands on a floor poured before there was a building. Light the wick and you are standing on Zion.
