Description
Sinai has a second name in the Torah: Horeb, חוֹרֵב. Spell it in full, חורב, and the carob, חָרוּב, is written with the same four letters.
When Israel needs the carob
Yeshayahu warns: if you refuse, חֶרֶב תְּאֻכְּלוּ, you will be devoured by the sword. The Midrash reads the same letters as חֲרוּבִין תֹּאכֵלוּ, you will eat carobs, since sword and carob share one root. Rabbi Acha draws the lesson: צְרִיכִין יִשְׂרָאֵל לְחָרוּבָא עָבְדִין תְּשׁוּבָה, when Israel needs the carob, they return (Vayikra Rabbah 35:6).
