Before creation

Zion came before the world.

From that place comes the infinitely unique light inside you. Here is how to unlock it.

Your potential

You were made as one infinitely unique person.

The work given to you was given to nobody else. Every flame is lit from a different vessel, with a different oil, by a different hand. Unlocking your infinite potential means shining the infinitely unique light only you can shine.

Kohelet says אֵין כׇּל־חָדָשׁ תַּחַת הַשָּׁמֶשׁ, “there is nothing new under the sun” (1:9). The Gemara reads the limit exactly: under the sun there is nothing new, קֹדֶם שֶׁמֶשׁ יֵשׁ לוֹ, “before the sun there is” (Shabbat 30b). The light of Day One came three days before the sun. That is the light you were given, and it is new every Friday when you light it.

Our goal

Bereishit, with Hashem

Creation was handed over with work still in it. The Gemara names more than one way to become God’s partner in that work, and this site is built to teach them, one day at a time.

On the first day He separated the light from the darkness. Shining your infinitely unique light is the same work, done from down here. Day One shows how.

At the Shabbat table

כל המתפלל בערב שבת ואומר ויכולו … נעשה שותף להקדוש ברוך הוא במעשה בראשית

Whoever prays on Friday night and says vayechulu becomes a partner of the Holy One in the work of creation.

Shabbat 119b

In judgment

כל דיין שדן דין אמת לאמיתו, אפילו שעה אחת … נעשה שותף להקדוש ברוך הוא במעשה בראשית

Every judge who rules with complete truth, even for one hour, becomes a partner in the work of creation.

Shabbat 10a

In every person born

שלשה שותפין הן באדם: הקדוש ברוך הוא, ואביו, ואמו

There are three partners in a person: the Holy One, the father and the mother.

The Oils

Scent came before the word

וְרוּחַ אֱלֹהִים מְרַחֶפֶת עַל פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם

“And the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters.” Bereishit 1:2

Before God said “let there be light,” a ruach was already moving over the deep. Ruach, spirit, and reiach, scent, grow from one root. Scent is the one thing the soul enjoys and the body does not (Berachot 43b).

For thousands of years oil has done many jobs. One oil heals the body, another anointed kings, another lit the Menorah. Today one oil moves a car across the country and another keeps its engine turning. Every purpose has its own oil.

Kol Tehom reads one purpose still waiting for its oil: carrying souls back into new vessels, one flame lighting the next.

Made in Israel

Light Mount Sinai in your home.

Sinai has a second name in the Torah, Horeb, חוֹרֵב. Spell it in full and the carob, חָרוּב, is written with the same four letters. The Midrash makes needing the carob the thing that turns a person around (Vayikra Rabbah 35:6), and Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai lived twelve years on one.

Our carob oil is Israeli carob from the Land, infused in olive oil, made in small batches and shipped from Petah Tikva. Light it in a lamp when you sit down to learn, or put a drop in an eggshell lamp on the Shabbat table for its warm roasted scent.
